Amid the gathering climate crisis, the world urgently needs “Digital Twins”.
A Digital Twin is a virtual representation that simulates as many events as possible on the surface of the earth. Modeling human impacts on water, food, and energy systems can help predict climate change. The “Destination Earth” project by European scientific organizations and computer experts at ETH Zurich has been working since 2021 and expects results in the next 7-10 years. Digital Twin data will be used to explore the impact of responses such as building wind farms across Europe or creating new ways to cultivate crops.
The project aims to help Europe become a climate central continent by 2050 and to enhance its sustainable development through environmental policies. The team aims by 2025 to have up to five digital models ready to work and seeks to gather their data to create a full Digital Twin.
Implications for the future:
- The global climate crisis and environmental problems will be better solved through studying data, letting humans and all life live longer on Earth.
- Digital Twins have been used to track various problems. This project may lead to a drive for all countries to create a national model to better solve problems.
- Testing and understanding global changes will be crucial to protecting the planet, including the development and promotion of living things to participate in this global mission.
