Lab-grown human organs will help us more than we can imagine.
Each cell in our bodies is constantly replaced as it wears out. The process continues all our lives. We may notice our skin regenerating. Total epidermal shedding takes place every 2-4 weeks. We lose about 510 grams of skin cells each year, according to the American Chemical Society.
Doctors and scientists at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem North Carolina are developing organs and tissues for almost every part of our bodies. They aim to create over 30 tissues and organs and to develop cell therapy. The goal is to develop new treatments.
Scientists in recent years have successfully cultivated various structures of the human body. A similar approach has been successfully tested in animals. Small human organs called organoids are used to study the function and structure of human organs as never before, including miniature brains, hearts, kidneys, stomachs, lungs, livers, bladders, blood vessels.
Implications for the future
- Replacing old organs with new ones can help us stay healthy and live longer. Sickness and disease won’t limit longevity.
- We will live longer but there may be enormous costs and requirements in knowledge.
- Disparities may affect who can access such advanced medical services.
