The average global temperature has soared 1.1°C since the Industrial Revolution. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) now expects the temperature to climb 1.5°C this decade. We will never be able to go back to normal weather.
Severe climate crises, including droughts, storms, and heat waves, will worsen and occur more often. Each tiny temperature rise matters. We can no longer take our time.
The UN recently held its 26th Climate Conference, or COP26, with 197 governments, NGOs, and the general public joining a vigorous carbon footprint reduction plan. New environmental laws may soon arise. So how ready is Thailand for green policies? How can we grow sustainably without economic loss under pressure from the global community? How can we get involved in solving this crisis?
Implications for the future:
- Failure to keep the global average temperature rise within 1.5°C will result in catastrophic consequences for all life on Earth.
- COP26 could bring serious penalties for countries with high carbon emissions. Small and medium-sized businesses in developing countries could be most at risk, as they rely on traditional manufacturing and lack knowledge and resources for clean technology. These businesses may suffer without government assistance.
